McIlroy fine tuning his game in Memphis
MEMPHIS — Don’t tell Rory McIlroy that playing in the annual FedEx St. Jude Classic isn’t important. Jack Nicklaus may think McIlroy, the former No. 1 player in the world, should be out at Olympic Park getting ready for the U.S. Open, but McIlroy felt like he needed to play this week after not making the cut at the tournament Nicklaus founded, The Memorial, a week ago.
McIlroy didn’t lead the pack after the first day of golf at TPC Southwind, but he was just two strokes behind co-leaders Jeff Maggert and John Merrick with a round of 68. (June 8, 2012, Page 6A)
