DUIs down over New Year’s
During what has traditionally been one of the year’s busiest nights for local DUI enforcement, the Oxford Police Department reported few arrests associated with driving while under the influence.
Between Dec. 16 and Monday, OPD officers made 15 arrests on DUI charges, however, just three of these DUI arrests were made on New Year’s Eve, said Cpl. Hildon Sessums with the OPD DUI Enforcement Unit.
The nasty weather might have helped keep people off the streets on New Year’s Eve, reducing the number of DUIs in Oxford. (January 4, 2011, Page 1)
“Over the Limit, Under Arrest” blitz begins for the holiday season
The national “Over the limit. Under arrest” campaign kicked off Thursday with the Mississippi Highway Patrol and local law enforcement agencies joining together to crack down on impaired driving.
The blitz will continue through Jan. 3. MHP will deploy extra manpower on Mississippi’s highways and set up checkpoints to stop drunk driving. The Oxford Police Department and Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department will be working along side of MHP to make sure the roads are safe in the city and the county. (December 20, 2010, Page 1)
First game weekend…
Local law enforcement agencies reported a busy but typical game day weekend with more than 55 arrests in the city of Oxford and the University of Mississippi combined.
OPD had four mounted police officers controlling crowds on the Square during the game weekend, along with eight officers who were on foot patrol. Around midnight, those officers were also joined by several patrol officers coming to help as the bars closed and masses of party-goers walked out onto the Square. (September 8, 2010, Page 2)
Sunday alcohol sales debated
More than 120 people gathered Thursday to share their opinions on Sunday alcohol sales, showing the Alcohol Task Force that the community remains mostly divided over the issue. Those against the sales are primarily concerned over college students rowdiness and those for it mostly focus on the economic benefit it could bring to Oxford. (September 3, 2010, Page 1A)
City enforces alcohol laws
Over the last two weekends, Oxford police officers have made 80 arrests, several being for alcohol-related crimes. Police officers were walking into local bars this weekend checking ID’s. From Friday to Sunday, 45 people were arrested, with 17 minors arrested for underage drinking; eight being charged with DUI and seven being drunk in public. (August 30, 2010, Page 1A)

New DUI testing vehicles to help catch impaired drivers
Impaired drivers on state highways could soon come face-to-face with a BAT mobile, but instead of a black cape and bat ears, it will be troopers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol who will be fighting crime and bringing drunk drivers to justice. (March 24, 2010, Page 1A)
