Christmas

Thankfulness

The Christmas holidays are a time, if there is any during the year, when we need to be thankful for all we have in our country. Local columnist Jimmy Reed points out that today’s date (the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entrance into World War II) and Christmas mark notable times in our country’s history and in it becoming the nation it is today, and urges all of us to keep an attitude of thankfulness. (December 7, 2010, Page 4)

‘Tis the season to be jolly. Or is it? Certainly, for many, it’s not as jolly of a time. Local columnist T.J. Ray takes a look back at how we used to help those in need during the holiday season and contrasts and compares that with what goes on in most places today. (December 1, 2010, Page 4)

          Shopping for the hard-to-shop-for

The question is to be expected about this time of the year: Have you come up with a list of things for people to get you for Christmas? It’s an easy question to answer when you’re talking about youngsters, but a bit more difficult when you get to older folks. Editor Don Whitten discusses the problems shopping for middle-aged males and others in the hard-to-shop-for category. (November 29, 2010, Page 4A)
