Billy Joe Shaver

Billy Joe Shaver plays Proud Larry’s next Wednesday

OXFORD TOWN – Country music legend Billy Joe Shaver lost parts of three fingers, broke his back, suffered a heart attack and had a quadruple bypass, had a steel plate put in his neck and 136 stitches in his head, fought drugs and booze and spent all the money he had and married two women a total of five times. Who is this guy? Find out on Page 6 of this week’s issue of Oxford Town as Shaver prepares for a show at Proud Larry’s on Wednesday, Dec. 7, AND a cameo appearance in Oxford Town columnist Jim Dees’ weekly feature “Lies and Other Truths.” (December 1, 2011, Page 6)

    Why Texas still matters

LIES AND OTHER TRUTHS – Two news stories out of Texas this week demonstrate why that state can still hold a warm spot in your heart despite its many excesses. One story was actually an obituary for Coots Matthews, who passed away last week at age 86 and was known for his ability to fight oil well fires with dynamite. The other was series of stories out of Waco describing the aggravated assault trial of singer/songwriter Billy Joe Shaver. Dees hilarity is on Page 6 of this week’s issue of Oxford Town. (April 16, 2010, Page 7)
