SHREVEPORT, La. — Lafayette’s goal to gain additional respect for its program and the state of Mississippi was accomplished on Saturday afternoon with a thrilling come-from-behind win over perennial power Evangel Christian Academy (Shreveport, La.) in the inaugural Battle on the Border High School Football Showcase.
Adjustments made on offense and defense ultimately made the biggest difference in the No. 1 Commodores earning the 35-34 win over the Eagles in the first of three games played at Independence Stadium, but Saturday’s win was also about rising to a challenge and good, old-fashioned smashmouth power. If you’re a fan of the No. 1 Lafayette Commodores and haven’t caught up on all your football formations, then Saturday’s game against Evangel Christian in Shreveport, La., will be right up your alley. The word bevy doesn’t accurately describe the amount of formations the Eagles employ during a given contest.
According to LHS defensive coordinator Eric Robertson, he has watched tape on the Eagles and said the formations shown on one film are completely different the next week. Such is the challenge facing the Commodores defense when they take on the nationally respected Eagles. (September 9, 2011, Page 8A)
