Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi

Officials welcome Baptist decision

While the final site for a new $300 million hospital has not been selected as of Monday, county and city officials are breathing a collective sigh of relief over knowing where the new hospital won’t be going.

Baptist Memorial Health Care Corp. officials announced Monday during the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors’ meeting, that the hospital will no longer consider building the new facility on land located on Highway 6 West, a few miles outside Oxford’s city limits. (April 5, 2011, Page 1A)

Phyllis Campbell writes to say that she’s a “concerned citizen” and to point out that not all “concerned citizens” have the same feelings about a possible site for the new hospital, while Lena L. Ward writes to urge citizens to let their representatives know their priorities for funding different programs. (March 17, 2011, Page 4)

        County voices concerns over hospital

At their regular meeting Monday, Lafayette County Board of Supervisors say they’re concerned about the hospital possibly building its new $300-million regional referral medical center west of Oxford off Highway 6. Too far away for comfort?

Assisted living facilities for seniors, veterans and persons with development disabilities in Lafayette County were all built where they are today largely because of their close proximity to where Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi is currently located.

But now, with Baptist officials planning on moving the hospital, officials from those facilities are concerned about the possible impact the move might have on their residents — particularly if the site selected for the new $300 million facility will be where Baptist affiliates recently purchased 107 acres off Highway 6 West, about seven miles away from where the hospital is currently. (March 8, 2011, Page 1)

                Hospital location tops concerns

After rumors had circled around Oxford for the past week about Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi buying land west of Oxford for its proposed regional referral center, Dick Cowart, counsel for Baptist, laid the rumors to rest during the meeting between Baptist officials, the Oxford Board of Aldermen and Lafayette County supervisors, and confirmed Baptist had purchased 107 acres, however, said Baptist has not selected a site as of yet. (February 23, 2011, Page 1)

More land sold off Highway 6

Further investigation into the sale of large sections of land located off Highway 6 West, near the Cumberland subdivision, revealed a total of 107 acres were sold and transferred — not once, but twice in one day.

Speculation and rumors have suggested the land is being bought by Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi to be used as the spot for its new proposed $300 million regional referral center. (February 18, 2011, Page 1A)
