Yesterday’s Papers takes a look at 1942

On this day 72 years ago, The Oxford EAGLE’s main story concerned the upcoming dedication of the new Catholic church — St. John’s. Also of note was the fact that cotton crops were being harvested and the local gins were getting busy. Scattered around the front page of the newspaper that week were several articles related to the war overseas. (September 3, 2014, Page 1)

St. John’s OK’d for education building

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church got the green light by the Oxford Planning Commission to build a new, two-story, 10,000 square-foot education building behind the church’s sanctuary. (June 15, 2010, Page 1)

The Oxford Knights of Columbus Council 10901 will host its annual Lenten Fish Fries every Friday during Lent at St. John’s Catholic Church, 403 University Ave., from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Catfish dinners will be served and the proceeds will go to the St. John’s building fund. (March 3, 2010)
