Walking Wednesdays
Every Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. (weather permitting), students can enjoy a healthy alternative to get to school by walking and participating in the Safe Routes to School program. Children can be dropped off between 7:15 – 7:30 a.m. at the following locations: Bramlett Elementary School students meet at the Lafayette County Chancery Building; Oxford Elementary School students meet at the OE Walking Track at the back of the school; Della Davidson Elementary School students meet at the Oxford Conference Center; and Oxford Middle School students meet at the Oxford Activities Center. No tax hike needed to fund Oxford School District budget
Oxford residents will not be hit with a tax increase to fund city schools. At a public hearing Monday on the proposed budget for the next school year, the board discussed the possibility of what sort of revenue the district could generate if a 4 percent tax hike was approved. But the board was adamant about not raising taxes. (June 15, 2010, Page 2)
City schools: no job cuts
Despite continued budget cuts from the state last year, the Oxford School District has put together a budget for the coming school year that calls for no job cuts. The district also does not intend to raise taxes. (May 18, 2010, Page 1, 3)
DeSoto Central SS steals show
Led by Ole Miss signee Casey Greene, the DeSoto Central Jaguars defeated the Oxford Chargers 10-4 Tuesday night at Edwin Moak Field. Greene hit two home runs — including a grand slam in a six-run sixth inning — and drove in seven runs to lift the Jaguars past the Chargers, who had won three straight coming into the contest. Seven local teachers earn certification
Ranking 13 in the country, Mississippi added numerous new National Board Certified teachers to its ranks this winter. Among the 222 new certified teachers in the state are several teachers from Oxford School District and one from Lafayette School District. (January 5, 2010)
