The Blackjack Connection

Gospel-country pickers are learning from each other as they gather on Mondays for informal jam sessions. It’s time to step up and be counted

News Editor Jonathan Scott has filled out – and mailed back – his 2010 Census form and he notes only one change from the census’ sloan of “Take 10.” He’d say “Take Nine” since it didn’t take him but nine minutes. Scott tells us the importance of returning the forms and gives us a look at how well we’re doing locally. (April 1, 2010, Page 4)

Lots happens during Spring Break vacation

Taking off a week for Spring Break isn’t anything new in an education-oriented community. Neither is having lots to catch up on when you return, as Editor Don Whitten found out after spending a week out of town. He discusses things that went on during the previous week, including deaths, weather, sports and local business. (March 22, 2010, Page 4)

Job training helps young adults

The Arbor Education and Training Youth Services program helps 17- to 21-year-olds by providing a two-week intensive training for job search skills and academic remediation. When the training ends, the youth is placed in a 90-hour internship, paid through the program. A new group will begin on Wednesday in Water Valley at the Lawrence Turner Community Center.

Letters to the Editor

EAGLE’s new Web site full of features

It’s been discussed for several years and it’s been in the serious planning and development stages for six months. And now it – The Oxford EAGLE’s new and improved Web site – is making its debut today. The site, which will offer something for all of our readers, will hopefully be a working model that will allow for e-subscriptions and other features for those who’d like to get their LOU community news via the Internet. (March 1, 2010, Page 4)

Letters to the Editor

Shaw of the Homeless Task Force thanks members of the Lafayette-Oxford-University community for attending a meeting about the local homeless problem, while Oxford Lions Club treasurer John Mulkey asks the community to help the club raise funds for local members of the Mississippi Lions Club All-State Band who will be traveling to Australia this summer. (February 26, 2010, Page 4A)

Did some folks miss out on the pride gene?

You’ve got to wonder sometimes if folks have any pride at all, especially those who throw out garbage while traveling on County Road 313 in Lafayette County. Don Whitten takes a closer look at the issue after hearing from a resident who picks up the trash that’s on the side of the road near his property. (February 26, 2010, Page 4A)
