Wrongful death suit filed in siblings’ death

The mother of a brother and sister killed last year in a wreck has filed a lawsuit against the driver, John H. Strickland Jr., who is facing two counts of aggravated DUI for being under the influence of drugs and other substances when he slammed into the vehicle, killing John and Sarah Wheat. (May 9, 2013, Page 1A, 5A)

Local land owners are asking a Chancery Court judge to allow their 160 acres of property to be annex into the city of Oxford have some wondering if this site is on a short list of possibilities for the location of a new proposed $250 million regional medical facility from Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. Another roadblock to safety?

If city and county officials sign a memorandum of understanding with the Mississippi Department of Transportation, an improved intersection at Highway 6 and West Jackson Avenue could still be three years out.

But whether that MOU will be signed anytime soon is still under debate by city and county officials. Both sides have admitted in public meetings to having “issues” with the MOU. (April 19, 2011, Page 1A)

MDEQ warns: Don’t swim, fish near UM

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality  issued a temporary water contact advisory Wednesday for Burney Branch and an unnamed tributary near the University of Mississippi campus. Officials say a new waste water treatment plant at the university may have leaked some sludge into the streams. MDEQ warns against swimming or fishing in the streams. (April 13, 2011, Page 2)
