More storms expected

Another storm front will be covering most of the Mid-South today through Wednesday and is expected to produce severe thunderstorms that include large hail — like last week’s storm, complete with high winds and possible tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service.

Lafayette County is under a flash flood watch, flood warning and tornado watch until midnight, unless canceled or continued, through Wednesday by the NWS. (April 26, 2011, Page 1)

Little Tallahatchie River threatens to spill over due to heavy rains

The rain stopped just in time to prevent the Little Tallahatchie River at Etta from overflowing. At 9 p.m. Wednesday, the river crested at 25.3 feet. Flood level is 25 feet. (March 10, 2011, Page 8)

Stiffer charges sought for drug dealers

Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit’s Keith Davis, and the other investigators at Metro, are pushing adding “enhancement charges” to regular drug dealing charges. Enhancement charges include, selling drugs within 1,500 of a school or church or child endangerment, for selling drugs when a child is present.

An enhancement charge does just that — it enhances the sentence of the defendant if found guilty. Under state law, selling drugs within 1,500 feet of a church or school allows a judge to double the penalty.

Several suspects charged with dealing drugs were indicted during the September grand jury and have been given enhancement charges along with being indicted with selling drugs.

See these and other indictments handed down by the grand jury in today’s EAGLE. (October 20, 2010, Page 1)

Two charged with arson

Two men, Marco Antonio Mason, 30, and Melvin Dean Turner, 27, were booked into the Lafayette County Detention Center for attempting to burn down a house in Taylor. The two men have been charged with arson, but no motive has been released. (July 7, 2010, Page 2)
