This week Oxford EAGLE columnist Jack Lamar Mayfield gives readers another lesson Lafayette County Education. Last weeks column he wrote about the formation of a new state university in which the Mississippi Legislature voted for Oxford to be the home site. Grandson follows family tradition

Retired Lt. Col. Sidney Johnson had the pleasure of performing one more duty Saturday morning as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.

Inside the sanctuary of the College Hill Presbyterian Church, Johnson swore in his grandson, Timothy Burnam, into the U.S. Marine Corps as a 2nd lieutenant. (August 23, 2010, Page 1A)

Stark Young’s days at the Walton Young Home

One of the most distinguished graduates of the University of Mississippi was also a resident of Oxford.
Although Stark Young was born in Como, he would later move with his family to Oxford. Young was born in 1881 and in 1890 his mother died. A few years later, his father, also a graduate of Ole Miss, would remarry and move to Oxford. (June 11, 2010, Page 3B)

First UM commencement didn’t have graduating class

Oxford and Ole Miss historian Jack Lamar Mayfield, in honor of this week’s graduation at the University of Mississippi, takes a look back at the school’s first commencement exercises in 1849, a commencement without any graduates from the new school. (May 7, 2010, Page 2B)

Run to fund camps

On Saturday, a half-marathon and 5K run, Run4Hope, will be held in Oxford to benefit Camp Hopewell’s diabetes camp. More than 600 runners have already signed up for the race and organizers another 100 to join as walk-ins on Saturday. (February 26, 2010, Page 1A)
