New roads — paths to the future

When new roads are usually built, Editor Don Whitten writes, we see little of the work until the project is finished. That’s not the case for a new road that will provide another entrance and exit from the Oxford Commons area. Man sentenced to 9 years for burning bar

Wayne Allen Stoker, 45, of Oxford was sentenced Monday by District Judge Neal B. Biggers to serve 108 months — or nine years — following his guilty plea in 2010 where he admitted to knowingly and maliciously damaging and destroying The Dam Bar by means of fire. He will be placed on three years of supervised release after his sentence in completed. Biggers also ordered Stoker to pay $211,000 in restitution. In court, Stoker admitted his motivation was racial hatred. (March 30, 2011, Page 1)

Illegal dumpers caught on camera

Lafayette County Solid Waste Manager Bobby Jones said his department has caught six people illegally dumping on developed land in the county using hunting, motion-detection cameras in “hot spots” around the county where they’ve seen repeated dumping violations. (February 11, 2011, Page 1A)

Yalobusha County Historical Society

Will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, in the Presbyterian Church in Coffeeville. The speaker will be Viet Nam veteran, Gene Hayes of Oxford. He will speak of his experiences in the Viet Nam War and will review his book “The Year of the Monkey.” The public is invited, and veterans are especially welcome. (August 9, 2010)
