Zack Stoudt

Nutt, Lee see improvement from QBs

“Better” was a word used by both Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt and offensive coordinator David Lee to describe how Wednesday’s practice session went for quarterbacks Barry Brunetti and Zack Stoudt.

Brunetti, who will be the starter for the BYU game, cut down on the mistakes he made on Tuesday in the Rebels’ most recent practice, Lee said. (August 25, 2011, Page 6)

Mackey forces Nutt’s hand in QB competition

Houston Nutt cut to the point pretty quick following Ole Miss’ football practice on Tuesday.

Flanked by reporters, the Ole Miss head coach skipped his customary opening statement and announced that Randall Mackey will be suspended for the Rebels’ season opener against BYU on Sept. 3 because of his recent arrest.

In Mackey’s place, Nutt said sophomore Barry Brunetti will start and junior Zack Stoudt will also see playing time.

Talking to reporters, it was obvious that Nutt was disappointed Mackey forced his hand in regard to the quarterback competition.

No clear cut favorite at QB after second scrimmage

Ole Miss’ final scrimmage before the official start of school was billed as the one that would decide who the starting quarterback would be for the season opener on Sept. 3.

While extensive film study may end up allowing offensive coordinator David Lee and coach Houston Nutt do ultimately decide who that player will be, the verdict was still uncertain immediately after Saturday’s scrimmage at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. (August 22, 2011, Page 1B)

Lee still looking for a No. 1 at QB spot

One of the biggest questions surrounding the Ole Miss football team heading into the 2011 season was which of the three quarterbacks on scholarship would become the starter for the season opener against BYU on Sept. 3.

A little more than a week after summer drills started, that same question remains unanswered as all three quarterbacks — Barry Brunetti, Randall Mackey and Zack Stoudt — remain locked in a tight race to become the frontrunner. (more…) (August 16, 2011, Page 8)

No real movement in Ole Miss quarterback race

While news of freshman cornerback Senquez Golson negotiating with the Boston Red Sox dominated discussion following Ole Miss’ first scrimmage of the preseason, there was actually football played at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

The quarterbacks have had an up and down week of practice and didn’t buck that trend on Saturday.

Of the three vying for the starting job, only Zack Stoudt threw a touchdown pass (a 25-yard pass to freshman receiver Donte Moncrief in single coverage).

Also, none of the three completed more than a third of the passes they attempted. (August 15, 2011, Page 1B)

Rebel ‘D’ shows up again in drills

For the second straight practice, the Ole Miss defense got the better of the offense in work designed to improve both units under pressure.

Following Ole Miss’ first practice in shoulder pads, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said he was impressed with how his linemen pushed up the field, especially on the ends where four players were credited with getting good pressure on quarterbacks Barry Brunetti, Randall Mackey and Zack Stoudt. (August 9, 2011, Page 6)
