HERNANDO — It was business as usual for the Oxford Chargers on the tennis courts as they continued their march towards a another Class 5A state championship.
OHS wrapped up its second straight 5A North Half title on Thursday with a 6-1 win over Hernando a year after defeating Ridgeland for the North Half title. The win advanced the Chargers (18-1 overall) to a meeting with the winner of Thursday’s Stone County-Gautier on Monday morning for the 5A state title at the Ridgeland Tennis Center. The Oxford netters made quick work of Pearl on Saturday, topping the Pirates 7-0 on the road in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs. Zach Wilder defeated Gary Blissard 6-0, 6-0 and Ann Marie Edlin defeated Emily Craven 6-1, 6-2 to pick up the singles points. (more…) (May 2, 2011, Page 3B)
Tennis has been more than a sport for Oxford High’s Zach Wilder, it’s been a way of life since he can remember. Oxford’s final regular season match of the season ended with a 7-0 win over Pontotoc on Monday. The Chargers made short work of the Warriors thanks to a 6-0, 6-0 win by Zach Wilder at boys singles and a 6-3, 6-0 win by Ann Marie Edlin over Kristen Pennigton. The No. 1 boys doubles team of Baxter Elliott and Robert Nance topped Cam Temmons and Ryan Henry 6-3 6-3, while the No. 2 boys doubles team of Quinn Elliott and Will Swindoll beat Denton McAuley and Brandon Temmons 6-4, 6-0. Oxford’s dominance in tennis continued with a 7-0 win over Saltillo Wednesday in Tupelo. The Chargers (5-0 overall) only lost three points during a match that served as a tuneup before playing in the Meridian Tournament this weekend. (March 24, 2011, Page 7)
Oxford’s drive to win a fourth-straight state title in tennis will begin Saturday with a preseason match against Pontotoc at the John Leslie Tennis Courts.
A day after capturing the overall team state title in Class 5A, the Oxford Chargers won six individual state championships to wrap up an extremely successful trip to the Ridgeland Tennis Center. (May 12, 2010, Page 8)
The Chargers (19-0 overall) latest victory earned them their first Class 5A North Half championship pennant and set up one half of Monday’s title match which will be played at 9 a.m. at the Ridgeland Tennis Center against either Brookhaven or West Jones.
