Looking through the catacombs of retired newspapers in The Oxford EAGLE, a few stories seem to pop out from the their graves. Though these stories are long past circulation, they hold on to life in their relevance and content.

Cats get new home

9 lives Cat Rescue worked with North Mississippi Animal Rescue to send 25 rescue kittens to a shelter in Sterling, Massachusetts.

Many of the kittens were found near apartment complexes, abandoned by owners who could not keep them or born without owners.

The Massachusetts shelter will offer better adoption opportunity, and most northern states have laws that protect animals form overpopulation with low-cost neutering.

UM experience helps ‘Food Network Star’

Former University of Mississippi caterer Linkie Marais is participating in the 2012 Food Network challenge show ‘Food Network Star’.

Born in South Africa, Marais emigrated to America in 1999 and moved to Oxford in 2006. Marais said she learned from working for Ole Miss how to work under pressure and how to work with others in the kitchen.

Unsupervised students prompt complaint

At a local city board meeting, the lack of supervision for a group of Oxford Junior High School students was expressed.

The students, waiting on the bus home from summer school, were unsupervised during their time off and sometimes causing problems at a nearby store.

Basketball and a study hall was suggested to help the students pass the time, but was declined due to a lack in funds for a supervisor.

First male home economics major at Ole Miss

Mark Davis, the 6 foot 2, 220-pound, former defensive tackler, made history by being the first man to major in home economics at Ole Miss.

Davis was famous for his sugar cookies, homemade biscuits and his cinnamon rolls. Coming from Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College as the top scoring kicker in the sate, Davis was also the first male in his high school to take family living and home economics.

At Ole miss, Davis’ love for food lead him to take home economics and planed on teaching home economics and coach football.

Board names new fire chief

The mayor of Oxford and board of aldermen selected Charley Litherland as the new fire chief.

The position had been filled by Oxonian Roy White until he resigned.

Litherland served as captain and training officer for the Vincennes Township Fire Department before becoming the new Oxford fire chief.
