Oxford trio sign to play for ICC

Three of Oxford’s best leaders and most productive players from the 2012 football season have decided to see if they can continue that success playing together two more seasons. Oxford DE Pegues wins Defensive Player of Year award from MAC in 5A

Xavier Pegues’ dominance on the football field in 2012 for the Oxford Chargers resulted in him being named the Mississippi Association of Coaches Defensive Player of the Year Wednesday.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Pegues, who will play in the annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic next week, was one of four Chargers who made the annual team on defense and one of six Chargers who made the team overall. (December 5, 2012, Page 6)

Jackets stop OHS short of goal

STARKVILLE — Oxford’s goal of matching up with West Point in the MHSAA Class 5A North Half title game next week was derailed Friday night. While West Point defeated Ridgeland to reach the contest that determines half of the 5A title matchup in Jackson, the Chargers were beaten 28-7 by the Starkville Yellowjackets to end their season. Three Oxford players make All-Star teams

Oxford’s success on the football field has already spilled over to postseason honors. Three players — quarterback Parker Adamson, defensive end Xavier Pegues and center Clifton Smith — were named to the state’s top two all-star games Wednesday. Adamson and Pegues will both represent Mississippi in the annual Mississippi-Alabama All-Star game, while Smith will represent the North in the annual Bernard Blackwell All-Star game. (October 18, 2012, Page 8)

Defensive effort keeps Oxford perfect

There was a point midway through the first half of Friday night’s Region 1-5A game between No. 9 Oxford and Lake Cormorant at Bobby Holcomb Field where LCHS head coach Nick Nester threw up his hands in confusion, disgust or both. When an opposing team holds another to negative yards on offense in a half, it can make even the most even tempered of coaches feel desperate and frustrated all at the same time.
