Commodores earn big victory over Batesville
Lafayette’s eighth-grade football team took a huge step to securing the Tri-Lakes Conference title Tuesday by posting a 30-14 win over Batesville at William L. Buford Stadium. The victory improved the Commodores to 5-2 overall and an even more important 3-0 in the conference with one game left to play against Grenada. The Commodores were never threatened by the Tigers in the game as Atarius Owens got them on the scoreboard first with a 16-yard run at the 4:32 mark of the first quarter. Passing, defense leads Oxford past Grenada
Precision passing and a solid defensive effort were just some of the many reasons the Oxford eighth-grade football team posted a 40-0 win over Grenada on Tuesday night at Bobby Holcomb Field. As coach Perry Swindall said following the win, the entire team played well and everybody contributed in some way in order to get the one-sided victory. (September 28, 2011, Page 8)
Oxford, Lafayette both win in middle school clash
The crosstown rivalry between those in the Lafayette and Oxford School Districts knows no bounds and does not discriminate by age group.
Tuesday’s action on the gridiron proved that when the Oxford seventh graders claimed a 20-8 victory, while the Lafayette eighth-grade squad was able to hold on for a big 20-16 win. (August 31, 2011, Page 6A)
Martin’s triple leads 11-12 Red Sox to win
Xaver Martin’s three-run triple in the bottom of the fourth inning helped lift the 11-12 year-old Smith Building Supply Red Sox to a 12-11 win over the Smoothie King Phillies in Oxford Park Commission youth baseball action on Thursday night. In other games from FNC Park, the 11-12 Old Taylor Antiques Giants beat the Oxford Dental Cardinals 10-2. In the 9-year-old league, the Davis Logistics Yankees edged the Larson’s Big Star Phillies 13-12, while the Hinton & Hinton Cubs edged the Holcomb & Dunbar Cardinals 11-10. In the 13-14 league, the Braves beat the Mississippi Auto Arms Twins 9-2, while the Farese Family Dental Brewers doubled up the Oxford Eye Clinic Rangers 16-8. (June 3, 2011, Page 6A)
