Rising senior outfielder Tanner Mathis is headed to the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. Mathis was a late addition to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox and is expected to play in center field and bat leadoff for the team.
Mathis is the fifth Rebel to play for a team in the Cape this summer, joining Austin Anderson with the Falmouth Commodores, and the trio of Hawtin Buchanan, Will Allen and Mike Mayers with the Bourne Braves. Allen is hitting .071 after 14 at-bats with a single, double, RBI and four strikeouts. He has also committed two errors in four games. Buchanan has a 9.00 ERA after allowing one run on two walks and one hit in one inning of work. Mathis, Anderson and Mayers have yet to appear in a game. (June 19, 2012, Page 7)
