Lady Chargers capture inspirational first title
The best writer in Hollywood couldn’t have penned a better script or a more appropriate ending to how the Oxford Lady Chargers finished out the 2010 MHSAA Class 5A state meet at Pearl High Friday evening.
After years of doing well and consistently finishing in the top five of the team championships, the Lady Chargers finally broke through to win the school’s first team title. Oxford won Friday’s 5A title by totaling 89 points, the most ever in a state meet, and the Lady Chargers did it with a strong showing in field events as well as an inspirational finish in the 4×400 meter relay. Chargers near perfect to wrap up State

Chargers beat West Jones to capture Class 5A title
Oxford’s dominance on the tennis court continued this morning as the Chargers won their third-straight state championship. The Chargers’ latest victim in a winning streak that has now reached 107 matches was West Jones, which defeated Brookhaven 5-2 in the South Half title match.
Oxford, which won the last two titles in Class 4A, defeated the Mustangs 5-1 in a match that lasted just over an hour at the Ridgeland Tennis Center to claim the Class 5A title. (May 10, 2010, Page 1B)

Oxford track teams ready for 5A North Half
Oxford’s girls and boys track teams are both looking to capture their first Class 5A North Half title Saturday at Bobby Holcomb Field. The Chargers and Lady Chargers have dominated their competition in both the district and region meets leading up to North Half and coach Scott Kendricks said his teams are prepared for the meet, which is the final opportunity for athletes to qualify for the next week’s 5A state meet. Chargers dominate Titans to win title
Oxford moved a step closer to its third straight state title in tennis with an efficiently dominant 7-0 win over Ridgeland Thursday at Avent Park.
The Chargers (19-0 overall) latest victory earned them their first Class 5A North Half championship pennant and set up one half of Monday’s title match which will be played at 9 a.m. at the Ridgeland Tennis Center against either Brookhaven or West Jones.
In a match that was decided in half the amount of the time it took the Titans (14-6) to reach Avent Park, the focused Chargers wanted to leave no doubt who was the better team on the court. (May 7, 2010, Page 6A)
Oxford track teams capture titles Monday
Two more all-around performances led to two more titles for the Oxford girls and boys track teams Monday at Bobby Holcomb Field. The Chargers won the Region 1-5A meet by scoring 200 points, 83.5 points more than second-place finisher Indianola-Gentry. The Lady Chargers totaled 191.5 points, the most ever in a region meet, a figure that clearly outdistanced Gentry. (May 4, 2010, Page 8)
Charger netters shut out Hernando

Chargers, Lady Chargers place first in 2-5A meet
Oxford’s final push towards the Class 5A state track meet got off to a great start Thursday as both the girls and boys teams won the District 2-5A titles at Bobby Holcomb Field.
The Chargers totaled 135 points, almost 100 points more than second-place finisher West Point, to win their title while the Lady Chargers totaled 109 points. New Hope finished second in that portion of the meet with 54 points. Rounding out the girls scores were Saltillo (52) and West Point. Saltillo was third in the boys portion with 45 points, while New Hope totaled 19 points. The top four finishers in each event advance to the regional meet on May 1. (April 23, 2010, Page 7A)
