NECC D-tackle Hooks could be steal for Rebs

COLUMN: With the impending loss of two defensive tackles — Gilbert Pena and Uriah Grant — after the upcoming bowl game, the Ole Miss coaching staff has been working hard to secure the signature of at least one junior college tackle for the 2013-14 seasons. (more…) (November 29, 2012, Page 8)

Freeze to make decision on starting QB Thursday

A decision on who will start at quarterback against Texas A&M will come Thursday, according to Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze, who announced Monday that there would be greater competition between Bo Wallace and Barry Brunetti at practice this week. Wallace, who has started every game this year, has been nagged by turnovers the past few weeks as well as a shoulder injury. (October 3, 2012, Page 6)

OM’s Wallace held out of practice

Ole Miss returned to the practice fields Tuesday for its first full day of preparation for Saturday’s matchup with No. 1 Alabama. A couple of hurt Rebels — defensive tackles Uriah Grant and Woodrow Hamilton — were back and going through various drills, while starting quarterback Bo Wallace was dressed but did not go through drills, according to coach Hugh Freeze. (September 26, 2012, Page 6)

Freeze sees more from Rebels after Tulane win

After watching film of Saturday’s 39-0 win over Tulane, Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said his team actually got as close to playing a complete as it has all season. With the exception of three lost fumbles, Freeze seem to think his team did everything expected of them in all three phases.

That’s good news considering the now Rebels (3-1 overall) travel to play at No. 1 Alabama on Saturday night to open their Southeastern Conference schedule. (September 25, 2012, Page 6)

Offense shows improvement in latest scrimmage

Ole Miss’ final scrimmage before the season opener Sept. 1 featured an improved offensive attack led by the running of freshmen backs I’Tavius Mathers and Jaylen Walton Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. First-year coach Hugh Freeze said following the annual Meet the Rebels scrimmage that Mathers, who finished with 100 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries, and Walton, who had 42 yards on eight carries, had been steady, if not spectacular, during summer camp. (August 20, 2012, Page 1B)

Ole Miss’ D-line has plenty of moving parts

Saturday was not the best day to get an evaluation of where the Ole Miss defense is heading into the final two weeks of preparation before the season opener Sept. 1. First-year defensive coordinator Dave Wommack wasn’t pleased with his unit following the annual Meet the Rebels scrimmage, calling the effort “flat” when describing the feel he got from the start of the scrimmage. (August 20, 2012, Page 2B)
