While news of freshman cornerback Senquez Golson negotiating with the Boston Red Sox dominated discussion following Ole Miss’ first scrimmage of the preseason, there was actually football played at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
The quarterbacks have had an up and down week of practice and didn’t buck that trend on Saturday.
Of the three vying for the starting job, only Zack Stoudt threw a touchdown pass (a 25-yard pass to freshman receiver Donte Moncrief in single coverage).
Also, none of the three completed more than a third of the passes they attempted. (August 15, 2011, Page 1B)
Ole Miss’ defense was dealt a major blow Tuesday when team physicians and the medical staff confirmed that junior linebacker D.T. Shackelford suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right leg. (more…) (April 13, 2011, Page 8)
Heading into the second scrimmage of the spring on Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt wanted to see his team show more consistency on both sides of the ball. His hope was his wide receivers would catch throws from the quarterbacks better, the running game would be even more physical and the defense would do an even better job of flying to the football.
Nutt was able to see his offensive line open more holes for the likes of Enrique Davis and Devin Thomas to gain big chunks of yardage, and while the receivers as a group made some plays, the overall performance was still inconsistent for Nutt’s liking. (April 11, 2011, Page 2B)
The 2010 season was disappointing not only for the Ole Miss defense as a whole, but specifically Wayne Dorsey.
Prior to the season a lot was made of Dorsey transferring to Ole Miss from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

A year of hard work on the recruiting trail ended up paying off for Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt and his staff Wednesday on National Signing Day. Following a year where the Rebels went 4-8 on the field, Nutt was able to land his best class of freshmen and newcomers since he arrived in Oxford from Arkansas. (more…) (February 3, 2011, Page 6)
Hard work is something the returning Ole Miss football players better get used to during the next several months based on what head coach Houston Nutt said during his final weekly press conference Monday. (more…) (November 30, 2010, Page 8)
On Saturday, the screen pass wasn’t used as much, but when the Mississippi State Bulldogs did call the screen, they were able to hit home runs twice.
The go-to player for Mississippi State on the screen plays was freshman running back LaDarius Perkins, who finished the game with three receptions for a game-high 140 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 98 yards rushing. (November 29, 2010, Page 1B)
