The Lafayette High School baseball team moved one step closer to locking up a playoff spot with a pair of wins against Rosa Fort on Tuesday evening. The Commodores (10-10 overall, 5-3 Region 2-4A) knocked off the Lions 15-0 and 12-0 in two run-ruled shortened games at W.V. Brewer Field. (April 11, 2012, Page 9)
Lafayette’s Eli Murphree picked a great time to find his curveball. Murphree’s best outing on the mound of the year not only ended a three-game losing streak, but Monday night’s 3-1 win over Senatobia also gave the Commodores some much needed momentum heading into the stretch run of the Division 2-4A schedule.
Murphree went the distance on the mound for the Commodores (7-10 overall, 2-3 in 2-4A) and limited the Warriors to five hits thanks in large part to the way he threw his curveball compared to the other times he has pitched. (April 3, 2012, Page 8)
It seems like a safe bet that Oxford senior James Lear will remember the last two days of March 2012 when he reflects on his high school career in a few years. One night after earning a save in Oxford’s 5-4 win over Saltillo, Lear led the Chargers to a 10-8 win over cross-town rival Lafayette at W.V. Brewer Field on Saturday afternoon. Lafayette’s Division 2-4A game with Lewisburg literally came down to one play. Unfortunately for the Commodores, the play didn’t go in their favor.
Three nights after beating Lafayette by nine runs, Lewisburg snuck out of W.V. Brewer Field with a 2-1 win to earn a season sweep.
Friday night’s game was decided in the top of the sixth inning when Lewisburg broke a 1-1 tie on a play at the plate. (April 2, 2012, Page 9)
Tuesday evening’s loss was a difficult one to swallow for the Lafayette Commodores.
Despite leading for the majority of the game, Lafayette allowed Marshall Academy to rally in the sixth inning and eventually claim a 5-3 victory on Day 2 of the Oxford Spring Break Tournament at Edwin Moak Field.
The Commodores won their first game of the day 2-1 in eight innings over Horn Lake. (March 14, 2012, Page 6)
