Liggins-Gooch connection too much for MCHS Trojans
Anfernee Gooch’s diminutive size can be misleading.
The Millington Central Trojans discovered that the hard way as the Lafayette Commodores routed the Trojans 35-6 at Mooney Boswell Field, Millington Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
By the time the game was over, Gooch, listed at 5-foot-6, had racked up 172 receiving yards and four touchdowns. (October 18, 2010, Page 1B)
‘Dores learn lessons in latest win
Two valuable lessons about being prepared at the start of a game and not underestimating an opposing team were the big things the Lafayette Commodores took away from their 42-24 win over Center Hill Friday night.
A slow start by the normally reliable LHS defense resulted in 17 first-half points for the Mustangs, while the overall execution of the Commodores, a group that usually has no trouble putting teams away early, was only enhanced for the future.
For coach Anthony Hart, the win, which improved the Commodores to 5-0 on the year overall and 1-0 in Region 2-4A play, turned out to be a good test for his team. (September 20, 2010, Page 4B)
Lafayette’s Tyson earns POW award
Other players may have had more yards and tackles, but no player made a bigger play over the weekend than Lafayette defensive end Keeyon Tyson.
With the Oxford Chargers marching down the field late in the fourth quarter, Tyson broke around the Oxford offensive line and was able to punch the ball away from Chargers quarterback Guy Cameron Billups.
Fellow Commodore Kris Miller fell on the ball and Lafayette’s 21-14 victory was secured. (September 7, 2010, Page 6)
‘Dores outlast Chargers in Crosstown Classic
The annual matchup between Lafayette and Oxford is called the Crosstown Classic for a reason and the latest installment in the series played Friday night at Oxford’s Bobby Holcomb Field definitely lived up to the moniker.
In a game that is usually decided by just one play, it was Lafayette junior defensive end Keeyon Tyson that produced the single-biggest play in a 21-14 win for the No. 1 Commodores. Just a little over a minute after the Commodores (3-0 overall) scored the game-winning touchdown on a 12-yard run by Demarkus Dennis at the 2:13 mark of the fourth quarter, Tyson was able to thwart a potential game-tying scoring drive for the Chargers (2-1) by slapping the ball away from quarterback Guy Cameron Billups at the LHS 13-yard line. Commodores score early, often in Friday rout
The Lafayette Commodores scored early, often and in a variety of ways Friday night as they posted a 35-16 victory over Memphis Trezevant in their 2010 home opener at William L. Buford Stadium.
Lafayette, now 2-0 heading into its annual Crosstown Classic showdown with Oxford, scored on its second play from scrimmage and on its last play of the first half (that capped an 11-play, 91-yard drive) in building a 35-0 lead that allowed coach Anthony Hart to sit many of his starters in the second half and work on building depth. Commodores shake off rust in win over Pontotoc
The Lafayette Commodores capped its preseason with a dominating 14-0 win over Pontotoc on Friday in a jamboree game at William L. Buford Stadium.
When talking to Lafayette’s coaches, the phrase sluggish was used several times to describe the squad’s performance despite limiting Pontotoc to just 15 yards of total offense.
