Fondren, Super, McGhee pace Chargers to fourth

PEARL — Three first-place finishes, highlighted by the final high jump of Justin Fondren’s prep career in Mississippi, paced the Oxford Chargers in Friday’s MHSAA Class 5A state meet held at Pearl High School.

Oxford scored 30 of its 51 points thanks to Fondren’s leap of 7 feet, Michael McGhee’s throw of 45 feet, 10 inches in the shot put and Austin Super’s mark of 14-3 in the pole vault. The Chargers finished fourth overall in the meet that was won by Pearl with 73 points.

Fondren finished first in the high jump and then attempted 7.25 to tie the overall state meet record of Marcus Jackson from J.Z. George but was unable to clear the bar during his three attempts. Fondren has cleared the height before but an athlete has to do it at the state meet in order for it to be a state record. (May 14, 2012, Page 2B)

Lady Chargers capture third straight Class 5A North Half championship

Seven second-place finishes helped ultimately allowed the Oxford Lady Chargers to finish first at Saturday’s MHSAA Class 5A North Half meet held at Mississippi State. Lady Chargers win Region 1-5A title

Dominant is what the Oxford Lady Chargers were Saturday in the Region 1-5A meet held at Oxford’s Bobby Holcomb Field. Oxford finished first in the meet with 212 points, almost 100 more than second-place finisher Center Hill (117). The Lady Chargers also finished with seven first-place finishes and a bevy of seconds to earn the title. First-place finishes garner 10 points, while second-place finishes garner eight. Oxford teams roll to division titles

Rainy conditions at Bobby Holcomb Field on Tuesday were only able to slow, not stop, the Oxford Chargers and Lady Chargers in the annual Division 2-5A meet. Both teams won the respective team titles despite the weather that slowed the track for running events. (more…) (April 18, 2012, Page 8)

Chargers capture Class 5A cross-country title

All season the Oxford High boys cross-country team has shown through its strong times that it was one of the best teams in the state of Mississippi. On Saturday, with the best runners assembled at the MHSAA Class 5A state meet in Clinton, the Chargers punctuated an already fabulous season by winning the overall title. The victory garnered the Chargers their fourth overall state title and first since 1998 and finished the year ranked as the third overall program in the state behind Tupelo and Ocean Springs. Oxford fares well at OMS Invitational

Oxford’s middle school boys track team continued to shine Thursday at the annual OMS Track Invitational held at Bobby Holcomb Field. Six other schools competed against Oxford in the event, including Grenada, Pontotoc, New Albany, Senatobia, Hills Chapel, Marietta School and Guntown. The Chargers won the meet followed by Grenada. Kendricks proud of OHS’ showing at Invitational

Saturday’s Corinth Invitational proved to be  more than successful for the Oxford High cross country team as not only did the junior varsity boys place first and the girls place third out of seven teams, but the varsity boys came in fourth while the girls came in sixth out of 19 teams. (October 19, 2010, Page 8)

OHS cross country fares well at MC Invitational

Despite several runners being absent, the Oxford cross country team was still able to fare well at the Mississippi College Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.

While the varsity boys placed ninth and the girls placed 11th, the junior varsity boys took fifth place and the JV girls placed eighth. (October 11, 2010, Page 3B)

OHS varsity teams fare well at Mississippi State HS meet

Oxford’s boys and girls cross country teams competed in the MSU High School Invitational meet held Saturday. Both teams finished fifth overall.

The Chargers were led by Lucien Duchaine who finished ninth overall with a time of 18 minutes, 11 seconds. Marcus Barnes was 16th with a 19:06, Kevin Clancy was 25th with a 19:31, while Wilson Gardner rounded out the finishers with a 35th-place finish (20:03).
