A more reserved, business-like approach proved to be the key to earning a win for the Water Valley Blue Devils in their final non region game of the season Friday night. Instead of the swagger and attitude that the team displays at the start of each game each week, the Blue Devils executed at a more subdued, methodical pace in their 33-6 win over Independence. Instead of hitting the gas early in the game, the Blue Devils found themselves hitting the accelerator more as the game wore on.
The main reason for a little less passion resided in the fact that two energetic starters on defense, Eric Buckley and Chris Conard, were held out for injury and illness. For junior linebacker C.J. Describing what Brandon Blake meant to the Oxford Chargers on the hardwood this season can’t be accomplished in just a word or small phrase. His value to coach Drew Tyler and his teammates was all encompassing. His role always seemed to change from game to game. From being the team’s leading scorer to the team’s leading rebounder to leading the Chargers in assists, he simply did it all when called upon. (April 14, 2010, Page 1B)
Two players each from the Water Valley girls and boys basketball teams were named recently to the All-Region 2-3A team.
Earning a spot on the girls team were C.C. Phillips and Ashley Phillips, while Tavi Toles and Matt Dalton both represent the boys team.
Jamelia Hoskins of Aberdeen was named the girls Player of the Year, while Anthony McDonald of Aberdeen won the boys top award. Latorrence Bivens of Aberdeen was named Girls Coach of the Year, while the Boys Coach of the year was Roy Hazzle of Aberdeen. (March 15, 2010)
Water Valley’s Lady Blue Devils traveled to Mooreville Tuesday and earned a surprising 56-41 win over the Lady Troopers in the first round of the Region 2-3A Tournament. C.C. Phillips and Ashley Phillips both played big roles in the win, which set up a date with Aberdeen on Thursday. (February 10, 2010, Page Page 9)
The Water Valley boys’ basketball team overcame a slow start to post a 60-52 win over North Pontotoc in the team’s final home game of the season Thursday night.
