Rebels can’t hold on to claim series

Just a couple of inches either way and who knows how Sunday’s game could have turned out at Oxford-University Stadium.

Down to their final strike of the series, Auburn center fielder Ryan Tella hit a two-out double that soared down the left field foul line and barely dropped in fair between the foul line and sliding Ole Miss left fielder Tanner Mathis.

Tiger left fielder Cullen Wacker then hit a double into the opposite corner, scoring Tella to tie the game.

The second double ended the day of Ole Miss starter Mike Mayers, who had limited the Tigers to just four hits until the ninth.

With Rebel closer Brett Huber on the mound, Auburn first baseman Garrett Cooper hit a single up the middle, scoring Wacker to put the Tigers ahead of No. 12 Ole Miss 3-2. (March 19, 2012, Page 6)
