WINONA — Water Valley coach Kary Bridges wanted his team to “add on” heading into the final inning against Winona on Saturday afternoon.
WATER VALLEY — A few small mistakes and a couple of decisions coach Kary Bridges wished he could have back ended up deciding Monday night’s regular season finale for the Water Valley Blue Devils. Water Valley entered the Division 2-3A matchup with South Pontotoc at Blue Devil field winners of 10 straight.
That stat is now winners in 10 of the last 11 games after South Pontotoc edged the Blue Devils 5-3.
Monday’s setback cost the Blue Devils (14-11 overall) the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Class 3A playoffs. WVHS will now play Winona in the first round, and since higher seeds decide how the best-of-three series is set up, the Blue Devils will likely have to defeat the Tigers at their home park Saturday in order to advance. WATER VALLEY — Momentum is not something the Water Valley basketball team will be able to take into this week’s Division 2-3A tournament at Aberdeen.
Both the Lady Blue Devils and Blue Devils lost on Senior Night on Friday in the WVHS gym to South Panola. The Lady Devils fell behind in the first half and never recovered as they lost 58-35, while the Blue Devils’ early first-half lead didn’t stick late as they fell 43-39 in the nightcap.
