A game filled with mistakes was almost erased by the Oxford Chargers’ best offensive inning of their MHSAA Class 5A quarterfinal series with Hernando Saturday night at Edwin Moak Field. RIDGELAND — Oxford’s most explosive offensive inning of the season couldn’t have come at a better time. Down 4-2 to Ridgeland, the defending Class 5A champions, at Titan Field, the Chargers rallied by scoring seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 9-4 lead, their first of the game.
Oxford went on to hold a shocked group of Titans in place the rest of the way and earn an 11-5 win in the first game of a best-of-three 5A playoff series that continues tonight at Oxford’s Edwin Moak Field at 6. (April 27, 2012, Page 6A)
A tough division slate has seasoned the Oxford Chargers heading into the next stage of the MHSAA’s Class 5A playoffs. OHS coach Chris Baughman believes that nine games against teams from Division 2-5A have prepared his Chargers for what he believes will be the toughest test of the season.
Oxford opens its best-of-three series on the road at Ridgeland, the No. 1 seed from Division 4, Thursday evening. The Titans (20-6 overall) defeated the Chargers in last year’s 5A North Half title series and Baughman said they are just as potent on offense. (April 25, 2012, Page 6)

Oxford’s 4-3 loss to West Point on Wednesday evening would have cost them them the No. 2 seed in the Class 5A playoffs, however Saltillo’s loss to New Hope on Wednesday allowed the Chargers to secure the No. 2 seed due to two wins over the Tigers during the Division 2-5A season.
The Chargers finished the year 4-5 in the division and enter the playoffs with a 15-10 mark overall. Oxford used four pitchers in the loss to the Green Wave but coach Chris Baughman has Steven Whitfield and Hunter Roth available to start the team’s best-of-three series against Yazoo City. Tuesday night’s game against New Hope felt awfully familiar for Oxford senior James Lear. Just nine days after lifting the Chargers to a dramatic win over Lafayette through the power of a two-run home run, Lear propelled the Chargers to a 4-2 victory over the Trojans with another two-run blast.
