After dropping their last two division games, the Lady Commodores pieced together a near perfect effort to up-end crosstown rival Oxford 9-1 on the road.
Friday night’s Crosstown Classic softball game with Oxford came down to the pitching of Lafayette’s Brooke Whitten. While the Lady Commodores got a couple of key insurance runs late in the 6-0 win, Whitten really didn’t need much help based on the effort she gave in the pitching circle. For six innings Monday night, the Oxford Lady Chargers led the Water Valley Lady Blue Devils 2-0 and seemed poised to win their first home game of the season. Oxford’s third annual Charger Classic begins today with a new coach, Steve Blackmon, leading the way. Blackmon, a veteran baseball coach who was most recently assisting baseball coach Chris Baughman, said his transition to softball has been good but a lot about learning.
