There wasn’t much Kendall Glass couldn’t do for the Lafayette softball team and coach Katie Moore on the diamond in 2013. Oxford’s stay in the MHSAA Class 5A softball playoffs came to an end Friday with a 17-1 loss to New Hope. The Lady Chargers’ season ended with a 7-16 overall record, while the Lady Trojans improved to 26-1. Despite losing the series, OHS coach Steve Blackmon thought his team showed improvement during the season and the series with the Lady Trojans, regarded as the top team in the state, gives him an idea of what needs to be accomplished moving forward. Oxford’s goal of winning the Division 2-5A softball title will have to wait until Thursday’s meeting with Saltillo. After dropping their last two division games, the Lady Commodores pieced together a near perfect effort to up-end crosstown rival Oxford 9-1 on the road.
Friday night’s Crosstown Classic softball game with Oxford came down to the pitching of Lafayette’s Brooke Whitten. While the Lady Commodores got a couple of key insurance runs late in the 6-0 win, Whitten really didn’t need much help based on the effort she gave in the pitching circle. For six innings Monday night, the Oxford Lady Chargers led the Water Valley Lady Blue Devils 2-0 and seemed poised to win their first home game of the season.
