Southeastern Conference

Photojournalism loses one of its superstars

When Associated Press photographer Dave Martin collapsed and died of an apparent heart attack on the Georgia Dome sideslines just after the end of the Texas A&M-Duke game earlier this week, photojournalism lost not only one of its best photographers but also one of the most helpful and best-liked guys in the business. Editor Don Whitten looks back at Martin’s influence and work. (January 3, 2014, Page 4A)

Growing concern becoming big issue locally

There’s a new buzz word working its way into lots of conversations in the LOU community these days – parking. Editor Don Whitten takes a look at the latest news on parking plans and changes at Ole Miss. (April 19, 2013, Page 4A)

Letters to the Editor

Football a hot topic of conversation these days

The pros are playing exhibition games, the local high schools have all posted an official victory and the Ole Miss Rebels play in just a week. With all kinds of football going on, Editor Don Whitten takes a closer look at some of the talk he’s heard about the 2010 season. (August 27, 2010, Page 4A)

Enjoying when life slows down just a bit

Have you noticed the shorter lines – at stores, restaurants, four-way stops, et cetera these last few days. It’s that special time of the year when the University of Mississippi population drops for a couple of weeks and yet the local school children are still in class. It’s not something we’d want permanently, Editor Don Whitten writes, but it is a time to enjoy. (May 12, 2010, Page 4)

Tourney decides title, but what about No. 1?

A lot of NCAA men’s tourney brackets have Duke in the Final Four. Ditto for West Virginia. But Butler and Michigan State? A tournament is a tournament, however, and strange things happen. One question, however: Does the team that cuts down the nets Monday in Indianapolis top the final Top 25 polls? Should it? (March 31, 2010, Page 4)
