LHS Commodores capture 4A North Half title

The No. 1 ranked football team in Class 4A all season is just one win away from actually being crowned as the best.

Lafayette’s Commodores advanced to Jackson to play in the MHSAA’s 4A state championship game for the second straight season after defeating Noxubee County 20-0 Friday night in the 4A North Half title game.

Friday’s win didn’t necessarily come easy for LHS (15-0 overall), but a defense that has been tremendously consistent all season long continued to shine and make things even tougher for the Tigers (13-2) on offense that it was on the Commodores, who have now only allowed 19 points in four playoff games. (November 29, 2010, Page 1B)

Rangers win MACJC North Division title

A season that has been built on team unit, hustle and efficient play on both sides of the ball ending up translating into a MACJC North Division title for the No. 4 ranked Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers Thursday night at Bobby Franklin Field.

Northwest capped a perfect regular season by defeating arch-rival Itawamba 31-14. The Rangers (9-0 overall) now host a first-round playoff game Nov. 6 at home against the No. 2 seed from the South Division. (October 29, 2010, Page 7A)

NWCC’s Woods excited for new year

Ricky Woods doesn’t like to lose. The veteran coach, who once won 60 games in a row at South Panola, isn’t used to not making the playoffs and competing for championships.

So when the Rangers missed the MACJC playoffs last season despite a 6-3 overall record, the goal for Woods was to get the program better and headed back in the right direction. (August 17, 2010, Page 7)

UPDATED: Lafayette defense holds its own vs. Pontotoc in jamboree

The Lafayette Commodores defense looked to be in mid-season form while the offense did just enough to defeat the Pontotoc Warriors 14-0 in the jamboree game tonight. (more…) (August 13, 2010, Page 6)
