Oxford rallies to top Tigers in Game 1

Errors stop OHS from claiming title
Two late inning rallies couldn’t overcome the bevy of mistakes made by the Oxford Chargers in their Region 2-5A game with Saltillo on Friday night at Edwin Moak Field. With a win over the Tigers, the Chargers could have wrapped up the No. 1 seed out of the division for the upcoming Class 5A playoffs. Instead of securing that goal, errors and miscues doomed OHS in an 8-7 loss that coach Chris Baughman saw coming before the start of the contest. (April 18, 2011, Page 3B)
Blue Devils’ offense, errors doom Chargers
Errors ended up preventing the Oxford Chargers from earning a clean sweep in a baseball twinbill at W.V. Brewer Field on Saturday afternoon. After defeating the Lafayette Commodores 6-4 in the first game of the day, the Chargers fell 14-6 to the Water Valley Blue Devils to conclude the day 1-1. (more…) (April 4, 2011, Page 7A)
Oxford shows maturity in win over NHS
Chris Baughman may be in his first season as Oxford High’s head baseball coach, but he seems to have already mastered the delivery of the between-inning speech.
Baughman’s discussion with his players after the visiting New Hope Trojans scored four runs off OHS starter James Lear in the top of the first inning on Friday was brief and to the point. More importantly than the duration, the message got the Chargers re-focused enough to allow their talent and maturity to take over. (more…) (March 28, 2011, Page 1B)
Davis, Mills help lead Lafayette past OHS Chargers
The high school baseball playoffs may be more than a month away from starting, but you wouldn’t have known that was the case from the atmosphere displayed Thursday night at Edwin Moak Field. (more…) (March 18, 2011, Page 6A)
OHS shows offensive depth in tournament
Oxford coach Chris Baughman had a big smile on his face following his team’s game with Senatobia at Edwin Moak Field on Thursday afternoon.
Sure he was glad that he and his staff were that much closer to concluding the four-day Spring Break Tournament, but the main reason was because of the success the Chargers had at the plate in an 11-1 win over the Warriors and the continued success of the team as they headed into the start of division play, which begins Tuesday at New Hope. Chargers shine in spring break tournament
Spring break has never been about beach trips and time off for the Oxford High baseball team and coaching staff.
Instead of playing a light schedule during the last full week of the year on the school calendar, OHS decided to host a bevy of baseball games at Edwin Moak Field. (more…) (March 17, 2011, Page 7)
Chargers rally to defeat Callaway in playoff marathon
A season of close losses finally turned in favor of the Oxford Chargers at just the right time Saturday against Callaway in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.
The Chargers advanced to Tuesday’s 5A North Half title match against Pearl by defeating Callaway 3-2 in penalty kicks. Oxford (13-4-1 overall) gained a huge measure of revenge with the win over Callaway, the only team to beat OHS last season, by playing as a team and learning from some of the tight games it had been involved in during the season. Oxford runs over Saltillo in 5A playoffs
Oxford forward Shea Mnichowski had an idea of how many goals he wanted to score heading into Thursday night’s Class 5A playoff game with Saltillo at Bobby Holcomb Field.
Mnichowski said he told Chargers coach Jamie Perkins that if he scored four goals, he wanted to score five before being lifted from the game in order to play a younger member of the team. (more…) (January 28, 2011, Page 6A)
Oxford takes two games from Lafayette
Fresh off of an uncharacteristic three-game losing streak, the Oxford boys soccer team took out its frustrations on crosstown rival Lafayette on a frigid Friday night cruising past the Commodores 8-0 at William L. Buford Stadium. Earlier in the evening, the Lady Chargers scored in the opening minutes of their game against Lafayette and held on for a 1-0 victory at the Ole Miss Soccer Complex.
Having lost three games prior to Friday’s big win, Oxford boys coach Jamie Perkins said he didn’t change anything strategically with the team. He just had a heart-to-heart talk with his players. (December 13, 2010, Page 1B)
