Oxford teams facing tough tests in North Half

Lady Chargers top Clarksdale in first round

It wasn’t long after the Oxford Lady Chargers lost to West Point in the Region 2-5A tournament championship last Friday that coach Shayne Linzy was looking forward to Monday’s first round of the 5A playoffs.

Despite Clarksdale’s overall size superiority and playing away from home, Linzy felt like his team would respond in fine fashion and be a very tough team for the Wildcats to have to defeat. His intuition proved to be right as the Lady Chargers used their speed and stamina to knock off last year’s 5A North Half champion, 54-52, in the first step to advancing to Jackson for the MHSAA state tournament. Chargers hold off West Point to win 2-5A title

Oxford’s knack for playing its best basketball in the postseason and winning division tournament titles under coach Drew Tyler continued Friday night as the Chargers knocked off West Point 71-61. The win not only secured a 10th championship trophy for Tyler in his 14 years of coaching at OHS, it also ensured a home playoff game Tuesday against Clarksdale a year after the Chargers had to travel to Ridgeland. Oxford boys, girls cruise in Round 1

The Oxford boys and girls basketball teams could not have gotten their postseasons started much better than they did on Tuesday at the West Point gym.

While it took the girls a quarter and a half to really get going during their 57-35 victory over the New Hope Lady Trojans in the first round of the District 2-5A Tournament, the Chargers took it to Saltillo from the opening tip and turned a 22-point halftime lead into a 75-39 victory.

Both Oxford squads were No. 1 seeds. (February 9, 2011, Page 9)

Oxford teams still working out the kinks

Going down the home stretch of their regular season schedules, both Oxford’s boys and girls hoops squads are happy to have earned victories over Saltillo at home on Tuesday.

Oxford splits doubleheader with West Point

Oxford’s girls basketball team defeated West Point on Friday night to remain undefeated in District 1-5A play, while the Green Wave defeated the Oxford boys 69-60 in the nightcap. Oxford hoops sweep New Hope

The Chargers and Lady Chargers opened District 1-5A play on a good note with a sweep of New Hope on the road Friday night. The Chargers beat New Hope 81-61 thanks to 32 points from Justin Fondren.
