Shaq Isom

Sutton looking to use team-first approach

The Lafayette Lady Commodores hoops squad is wasting no time kicking off their season.

This weekend, the Lady ‘Dores will participate in Hickory Flat’s jamboree, a week before Water Valley and Oxford’s squads open their season, and a month before the Commodores begin their season.

This year, according to coach Amy Sutton, the Lady ‘Dores will once again be a well-balanced squad with every player expected to pull their own weight. (October 29, 2010, Page 7A)

LHS drops emotional North Half title match

The Lafayette Lady Commodores had a lot on their mind during Thursday’s match at Lewisburg. Having fallen to the Lady Patriots twice during the regular season, and with a second-straight trip to Jackson for the state tournament on the line, the Lady ‘Dores played an emotional first game.

Eventually, however, the momentum swung in Lewisburg’s favor and the Lady Commodores were never able to recover, dropping the match 3-1 (15-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-16). (October 8, 2010, Page 7A)

Win propels Lafayette to North Half

There have been a slew of matches recently where the Lafayette Lady Commodores volleyball team was able to cruise to victory.

While Lafayette still defeated Ackerman 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-16) at home to advance to the third round of the Class 1 playoffs, Tuesday’s victory was not one of those matches. (October 6, 2010, Page 9)

Lewisburg eliminates LHS from playoffs

The Lafayette Lady Commodores will not be making a second-straight run at a state title.

With a return trip to Jackson on the line, the Lady ‘Dores were unable to knock off Region 2 leading Lewisburg, falling at home 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-19) on Tuesday. (September 22, 2010, Page 6)

Byhalia no match for Isom, Lafayette

Byhalia head coach Stacy Filocco couldn’t help but smile during Tuesday’s match at Lafayette as Shaq Isom repeatedly buried stray passes from her overmatched players at the net.

“She was very aggressive at the net. We kept feeding her balls and she was putting them away,” Filocco said matter-of-factly following Lafayette’s 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-9) victory at the LHS gym. (September 15, 2010, Page 9)

Lady ‘Dores knock off WVHS

A complete team effort proved to be the key to a 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-6) win for the Lafayette Lady Commodores over the Water Valley Lady Blue Devils Tuesday.

A day after LHS defeated Senatobia to win its first district match of the season, the team turned around Tuesday and recorded another important district win over WVHS. LHS topped Senatobia 3-0 on Monday and then handled Water Valley with the use of a solid service game and aggressive kill shots.

For LHS coach Rachel Wenzel, playing back-to-back days was a good thing because her team will have to play three matches on Saturday in the Tupelo Volleyfest. (August 25, 2010, Page 9)

LHS volleyballers gearing up for another run at State

If experience breeds confidence, the Lafayette Lady Commodores volleyball squad has nothing to worry about in 2010.

When Lafayette hits the court today at Tupelo for its season opener, its roster will be overflowing with both, confidence and experience.

Less than a year removed from the playing Center Hill in the Class 4A state championship match, the Lady Commodores will accept nothing less than another shot at bringing home a title.
And with a squad that boasts six seniors, second-year head coach Rachel Wenzel likes her team’s chances. (August 10, 2010, Page 7)
