  • George Washington “June” Bell — 69, died Sunday, March 1, 2015, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Serenity-Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford, with the Rev. Marvin Quarles officiating. Burial will follow in Providence United Methodist Church in Abbeville. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Born in Abbeville, he professed a hope in Christ at an early age and united with Pilgrims Rest Church in Lafayette County. He attended Gordon School in Abbeville, and he worked at Ray Farms in Abbeville. He loved to help anyone in need, and being around family and people.

Survivors include three nieces, Loretta Morris, Linda Quarles and Barbara Marion, all of Abbeville; two nephews, Freddie Marion and Tommy Marion, both of Abbeville; and two special cousins, Ora Redmon and Tina Sisk, both of Oxford.

  •  WATER VALLEY — Sheila Gregory Nelson, 51, died Sunday, March 1, 2015, at her home in Water Valley. Services were originally scheduled to be held at 11 this morning in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley, with Chaplain Wayne Harlow and Pastor Bill Rutledge officiating. Burial was to follow in the Walker Cemetery in Yalobusha County. However, due to today’s inclement weather, today’s services were postponed.
  •  Rebecca “Becky” Lynn Chrestman Murphree — 59, died Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at her home in Lafayette County. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford, with the Rev. Gerald Shook and the Rev. Ken Hanks officiating. Burial will follow with a graveside service at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Calhoun County. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Born in Calhoun County, she was a legal assistant at Tannehill, Carmean and McKenzie PLLC in Oxford. She was a member of Anchor Baptist Church where she attended the Grace Sunday school class, and formerly taught a Bible study class and assisted with children’s church. She loved her scrapbooking club, reading and cross stitch. She enjoyed playing and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Lindsay Murphree Hastings of Bruce; a son, Jason Lee Murphree of Oxford; two brothers, Mike Alford of Tupelo and Bobby Chrestman of Pontiac, Ill.; four sisters, Mary Bowker of Anchorage, Alaska, Terry West of Washington State, Reba Ward of Big Creek and Noelle Chrestman of Hawaii; and two grandchildren.

  • SOUTHAVEN — Betty Ann McCoy Sullivan, 72, died Tuesday, March 3, 2015. Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Southaven Community Church in Southaven. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Hernando Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Originally from Yocona, she lived in Southaven. She was a retired nurse.

Survivors include her husband, Stanley Sullivan of Southaven; two daughters, Sherry Cupp and Belinda Higgins, both of Southaven; a son, Charles A. Clark of Southaven; a brother, Tim McCoy of Potlockney; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

  • Glynn Jenkins Hobby Tatum, 83, died Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at her home in Oxford. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford, with the Rev. Jerry East officiating. Burial will follow in Springdale Cemetery. Visitation will be held for two prior to the service at the funeral home.

Born in Sledge, she was a retired hair dresser at Glynn’s Beauty Shop. She was a member of Yellowleaf Baptist Church and loved reading her Bible. She enjoyed gardening and arranging the flowers that she grew. She was a quick-witted lady who loved to laugh. Her home was the gathering place where she found pleasure in cooking for her family. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Aubrey Lee Hobby and James Leon Tatum; a daughter, Robin Gail Hobby; and a son, Randy Hobby.

Survivors include her daughters, Kem Hobby Gossett and Connie Hobby, both of Oxford, and Dana Tatum Harwell of Abbeville; her sons, Marty Hobby of Sardis and Kelly Hobby of Holly Springs; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

FRANCIS GARY FOURNET JR. – 89, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at the Mississippi Veterans’ Home in Oxford. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at McKneely and Sons Funeral Home in Hammond, La. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and for two hours prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.

BETTY DEE KEHOE MELTON – 85, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at her home in Water Valley. CHARLES ANTHONY PANETTA – 80, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at Allen Morgan Health Center in Memphis. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Oxford, with Father Joe Tonos officiating. DARLENE TOWNSEND-CAROTHERS – 57, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the T.O.M.B. Association Building on Highway 334, with the Rev. Eddie Goliday Sr. officiating. GERALD MURRAY STAGE JR. – 67, died Sunday, May 29, 2011, at Baptist-Memphis Hospital in Memphis. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Cordova. Coleman Funeral home is in charge of the arrangements.

DAVEY LEE TIDWELL – 78, died Monday, May 30, 2011, in Clarksdale. Visitation will be Thursday from noon to 2 p.m. at Coleman Funeral Home. Four held in murder

Three men – Willie Anthony Canon, 24; Justin Eugene Montez, 25; and Adam Corey Ferguson, 20 – and one woman – Kasie Lynn Jones, 20 – have been arrested in connection with the Thursday beating death of Derald “Pete” Connell. The men were charged with capital murder and Jones was charted with accessory after the fact of capital murder. (April 6, 2010, Page 1)
