No real movement in Ole Miss quarterback race

While news of freshman cornerback Senquez Golson negotiating with the Boston Red Sox dominated discussion following Ole Miss’ first scrimmage of the preseason, there was actually football played at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

The quarterbacks have had an up and down week of practice and didn’t buck that trend on Saturday.

Of the three vying for the starting job, only Zack Stoudt threw a touchdown pass (a 25-yard pass to freshman receiver Donte Moncrief in single coverage).

Also, none of the three completed more than a third of the passes they attempted. (August 15, 2011, Page 1B)

Rebels produce mixed results Wednesday

The Ole Miss Rebels were in pads for the first time during Wednesday’s practice session.

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt saw some positives gained in the workout, but he did admit that the team looked tired at the end of the workout which meant drills weren’t as crisp as he wanted.

“We got to get a little tougher. The pads added a little extra weight on them today. They got a little tired there towards the end,” Nutt said. “We’ve had a good few days though. We’ve put a lot of learning, a lot of installs in, a lot of thinking, so you find out a lot about them, especially our younger people. I’ve been really proud of them. (August 11, 2011, Page 1B)

Rebel ‘D’ shows up again in drills

For the second straight practice, the Ole Miss defense got the better of the offense in work designed to improve both units under pressure.

Following Ole Miss’ first practice in shoulder pads, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said he was impressed with how his linemen pushed up the field, especially on the ends where four players were credited with getting good pressure on quarterbacks Barry Brunetti, Randall Mackey and Zack Stoudt. (August 9, 2011, Page 6)
