Jessica Pearson always had a knack of turning nothing into something.
As the setter on Oxford’s volleyball team, it wasn’t uncommon to see Pearson not only set up a teammate for the kill when the Lady Chargers’ passing was on point, but also go sprawling out of bounds in an attempt to keep the play alive. (more…) (October 25, 2012, Page 1B)
The 2012 season didn’t go the way Oxford had hoped, but Thursday night’s season finale provided at least a little solace for the home team.
Looking to end the season on a high note, the Lady Chargers earned a convincing 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-18) victory over Corinth at the OHS gym. (September 28, 2012, Page 7A)
There were several nervous moments for Oxford High volleyball coach Tara Ross in the Lafayette gym Thursday night. In a match that was decided on errors made by both teams as much as it was outstanding plays turned in, Ross knew that if her team focused better they had a shot at recovering from an early 2-1 deficit and earning a win over LHS. It wasn’t pretty, but the Lady Chargers volleyball team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Senatobia 3-2 (18-25, 24-26, 25-10, 25-19, 15-12) on Tuesday.
Emily Mims had a team-high 12 kills, while Anna Katherine Kessinger and Sara Mims each contributed 11 kills to the cause. Setter Jessica Pearson also led OHS with 40 assists. Next up for Oxford is a crosstown showdown at Lafayette on Thursday starting with a junior varsity match at 4 p.m. (August 15, 2012, Page 7)
The Lady Chargers volleyball squad got Oxford’s 2012-13 school year off to a good start Tuesday by sweeping the visiting Ripley Lady Tigers 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-14) at the OHS gym.
The performance was far from perfect, but for an OHS squad that returns just four members from the 2011 varsity squad, a win is a win. (August 8, 2012, Page 7)
Oxford High volleyball coach Tara Ross knows she doesn’t have a bevy of tall girls on the front line or a roster filled with veterans like she did last year. What Ross does have is a group of Lady Chargers who all get along, who like to compete and so far, have shown the ability to absorb knowledge and get better with each practice. A year ago Ivory Alexander was still finding her way on Oxford High’s volleyball court, still adapting to her teammates and coach Tara Ross’ style.
Against Senatobia at the OHS gym on Tuesday, Alexander’s maturity and athleticism made the difference as the Lady Chargers picked up a 3-1 (25-11, 23-25, 25-12, 25-19) victory.
The junior didn’t just rack up an abundance of kills or blocks, but she helped her team in a number of ways, finishing the match with four kills, two digs and four aces. (August 18, 2010, Page 9)
A young, but energetic group is what Oxford High volleyball coach Tara Ross has to work with in 2010.
The Lady Chargers take the court tonight at Senatobia before returning home for their home opener on Thursday. Ross only has one senior on this year’s team — Kathryn Stocks — but she has several youngsters that have shown they want to get better and with the proper amount of patience, should be good in the future.
