Oxford capped off a perfect regular season on the court Monday afternoon with a 7-0 win over Lafayette at Avent Park. The Chargers, now 16-0 heading into the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs, feature a senior class that is 116-2 during their career and Monday’s match with the Commodores was Senior Day. Avent’s Park was surrounded by spectators Thursday afternoon as Lafayette and Oxford closed out their regular seasons with the annual tennis meeting between the two schools.
With both squads already a part of the Class 4A (LHS) and 5A (OHS) playoffs, Thursday’s match was about different things for each coach.
The Chargers defeated the Commodores 5-2 but the two wins were a marked improvement for Debbie Swindoll’s Commodores, who lost 7-0 to OHS last year.
Apart from the two wins, the No. 1 boys doubles match had to be decided with a tiebreaker, while two other doubles matches were also competitive. (April 13, 2012, Page 7A)
Oxford earned seven wins in eight junior varsity matches with Pontotoc on Monday. Callan Shinall beat Chet Wilson 6-2, 6-1 in boys singles, while Madison Cobb defeated Molly Chamblee 6-2, 6-1 in girls singles. (more…) (April 3, 2012, Page 9)
