Oxford earns home sweep of Clarksdale

Tara Ross proposed a deal her volleyball players couldn’t refuse: Win Thursday’s match against Clarksdale in three straight sets and there will be no practice on Friday.

The Lady Chargers responded to the wager. After cruising through the first two sets, Oxford had to rally to claim the third set and the match 3-0 (25-6, 25-7, 25-23). (September 23, 2011, Page 6A)

LHS’s Dennis excited to join Lambuth

A chance to play a new position, as well as play for a four-year school relatively close to home, is what made Lafayette’s Austin Dennis chose Lambuth University Wednesday on National Signing Day. Dennis, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound tackle for the Class 4A state champion Commodores this season, said he was excited about the opportunity to play for the Jackson, Tenn., based school and play for Ron Dickerson, Sr., a well respected coach who was the head coach at Temple University. (February 3, 2011, Page 8)

Harris gets his shot to start

It’s hard to hide a 6-foot-7 frame on the football field. It’s that kind of height that makes coaches drool.

But for the past two seasons, Ole Miss receiver Melvin Harris remained hidden — whether because of depth at the position or an inability to “put it all together” — at the end of the Rebels’ sideline waiting for mopup duty.

At some point during the offseason the Buford, Ga., native finally began to put it all together and on Saturday the redshirt sophomore will make his first career start when the Rebels host Jacksonville State at 2:30 p.m.

For Harris, finally getting his shot against the opposition’s best has been a long time coming. (September 3, 2010, Page 10A)

Rebel QBs make case for No. 1 role in scrimmage

A difficult decision on which quarterback to start in the season opener against Jacksonville State is what Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt and his offensive staff is currently facing after Saturday’s “Meet the Rebels” scrimmage.

Both Nathan Stanley and Jeremiah Masoli performed well in front of an estimated crowd of 9,000 fans at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Stanley was red-hot from a passing standpoint as he completed 10 of 11 throws for 117 yards. Stanley didn’t throw a touchdown pass, but he did have a 25-yard touchdown run once the offense  started working on situations inside the red zone. (August 23, 2010, Page 1B)

Sisk, Dickerson pace Lady Chargers

Early exposure to track meets and parents with strong track backgrounds, coupled with natural talent, have really proved to be a winning formula for Oxford High track athletes Erika Sisk and Kristen Dickerson this season.

Sisk and Dickerson have played big parts in the success the Lady Chargers have achieved throughout the year and they are two of the main reasons why the team has a chance of capturing the school’s first girls track title on Friday at the MHSAA Class 5A meet in Pearl. (May 13, 2010, Page 1B)

Sawyer impresses during Grove Bowl

Headlines throughout the spring have repeatedly asked who will fill the shoes of quarterback Jevan Snead, running back Dexter McCluster and the three offensive linemen who have all graduated and are poised to play on the next level.

But one vacated position that has flown somewhat under the radar is that of cornerback.

With Marshay Green and Cassius Vaughn having graduated, the Rebels are faced with the tough task of replacing two experienced cornerbacks.

On Saturday, redshirt freshman Charles Sawyer showed Ole Miss fans and coaches alike why he might be the perfect guy to step up and start at cornerback opposite Jeremy McGee or Marcus Temple. (April 19, 2010, Page 2B)

Rebel O getting frustrated by defense

Shortly after the Ole Miss defense stopped another play for a minimal gain during Monday’s spring practice session, senior end Kentrell Lockett told running back Rodney Scott he knew what play the offense was going to run.

Whether Lockett really meant what he said or not, his message was clear: the Rebel defense can shut down most anything the offense is throwing their way. (April 6, 2010, Page 8)

Rebels add 22 on National Signing Day

OLE MISS FOOTBALL — A strong final push turned into an outstanding National Signing Day for the Ole Miss football program and Houston Nutt Wednesday. Ole Miss was able to sign some important players for the 2010 class and, in the process, vault up the national recruiting rankings. The Rebels signed 22 new players in addition to two junior college players the team signed in December. (February 6, 2010, Page 6)
