Local law enforcement agencies reported a busy but typical game day weekend with more than 55 arrests in the city of Oxford and the University of Mississippi combined.
OPD had four mounted police officers controlling crowds on the Square during the game weekend, along with eight officers who were on foot patrol. Around midnight, those officers were also joined by several patrol officers coming to help as the bars closed and masses of party-goers walked out onto the Square. (September 8, 2010, Page 2)
A University of Mississippi student filed a complaint against a university police officer last week, accusing the officer of using excessive force. The off-duty UPD officer allegedly observed the student and a friend walking on campus smoking marijuana. During the arrest the student said that the officer “never identified himself as a police officer.” (July 14, 2010, Page 2)
Water Valley Superintendent Sammy Higdon told his school board he would be attending a statewide rally of school superintendents and education supporters in the capital city Tuesday. The WV School Board took up other issues, including the penalty for cursing at school. (March 24, 2010, Page 2A)
