Ole Miss blanks Tulane for rare shutout
NEW ORLEANS — Ole Miss’ defenders had smiles on their faces after Saturday’s game with Tulane in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. A week after allowing 676 yards in a 66-31 loss to No. 12 Texas, the Rebel defense made a huge turnaround in a 39-0 win over the Green Wave. (more…) (September 24, 2012, Page 1B)
QB Ash has career day in in Texas Longhorns’ rout
Defense was supposed to be the strength of the No. 14 Texas Longhorns, not the throwing of sophomore quarterback David Ash. For a quarterback who had only thrown for 377 yards the first two games combined, Ash turned in a career-best night by throwing for 326 yards and four touchdowns.
He connected on 15 straight passes during the game — which was three off the record held by Colt McCoy — and finished a blistering 19-for-23 overall.
Texas’ offense finished the game with 676 yards of total offense that also included 350 yards on the ground. (September 17, 2012, Page 1B)

As it turns out, the Rebels are.

Freeze: Rebs have hands full with UTEP
When Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze turned on UTEP’s game film from their 24-7 loss to No. 4 Oklahoma, he didn’t necessarily like what he saw from the Rebels’ next opponent. (September 4, 2012, Page 8)

Offense shows improvement in latest scrimmage
Ole Miss’ final scrimmage before the season opener Sept. 1 featured an improved offensive attack led by the running of freshmen backs I’Tavius Mathers and Jaylen Walton Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. First-year coach Hugh Freeze said following the annual Meet the Rebels scrimmage that Mathers, who finished with 100 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries, and Walton, who had 42 yards on eight carries, had been steady, if not spectacular, during summer camp. Freeze pleased with inside runs of Parker
One of the misconceptions about Ole Miss’ new-look offense installed by coach Hugh Freeze is that the quarterback passes every down and the running game, well, is soft and unable to get the tough yard on a consistent basis. Freeze has tried to erase that misnomer about his offense since he was hired and most recently during summer camp.
He pointed out after Thursday’s practice session — one that included some tough runs made by former South Panola standout Nick Parker — that the offense is balanced, if not leaning towards more run plays. (August 17, 2012, Page 6A)
