CLINTON — The Lafayette girls, sparked by individual gold medalist Peyton Hamann and two others in the top six performers, claimed third place in the MHSAA Class 4A state cross-country meet held Saturday at Mississippi College’s Choctaw Trails.

The Lafayette Lady Commodores and Commodores traveled south to Mississippi College Saturday to compete in the MC Watson Ford Invitational cross country meet held at Choctaw Trails. A total of 278 runners from three different states competed in the meet. Peyton Hamann and Esmeralda Rodriguez both shattered their previous personal records, according to coach Ben Mikell. Lafayette’s boys cross country team finished fifth out of 21 teams that competed in the Southern Tees Challenge held Saturday at the New Albany Sportsplex. All five runners that competed for the Commodores finished the course in under 21 minutes. (more…) (October 1, 2012, Page 4B)
Lafayette’s standout trio of Esmeralda Rodriguez, Peyton Hamann and Rachel Starnes placed fifth, eighth and 12th at the Saltillo Invitational held this past Saturday. PEARL — If someone didn’t know what the points total was, they would have thought the Lafayette Lady Commodores were about to win Monday’s MHSAA Class 4A state track meet at Pearl High School by the way they finished the 4×400 meter relay.
Led by a scorching-fast anchor leg turned in by Mariah Buford, the Lady Commodores punctuated a very successful day on the track with a first-place finish in the relay with a new best-in-class time of 4 minutes, 9.79 seconds. Nine Lafayette Lady Commodores qualified for the upcoming MHSAA Class 4A meet that will be held at Pearl Saturday. The Lady Commodores and Commodores competed in the 4A North Half meet hosted by Charleston this past Saturday, but no official results have been posted to know where both teams finished. Led by the speed of Mariah Buford, the Lafayette Lady Commodores finished second in Saturday’s Region 1-4A track meet at Pontotoc. The Lady Warriors won the title by totaling 202 points.
