Tuesday night went about about as well as it could have for D.K. Buford and the rest of Lafayette’s seniors.
Buford, along with six teammates, were recognized on Senior Night at W.V. Brewer Field before the Commodores played their regular-season finale against Ripley, and the good vibes continued once the game started as Lafayette rolled to an 11-1 win in five innings that clinched the Region 2-4A title and the region’s top playoff seed. A balanced offensive performance and a gutty pitching performance turned out to be the perfect recipe for the Lafayette Commodores in their home matchup with New Albany Tuesday night. (April 9, 2014, Page 2B)

Once Cody Greer got in a groove, Lafayette’s offense didn’t have much of a chance. (March 24, 2014, Page 3B)

Tuesday’s local sports briefs include:
– Ben Hubbard made a hole-in-one at the recent Oxford Lady Charger Softball Benefit golf tourney played at the Country Club of Oxford
– ESPN announced Monday it plans to televise Ole Miss basketball games against Kentucky and Oregon this season.
– Ole Miss has promoted Lady Rebel assistant tennis coach Jason Ontog to associate head coach.
– Registration is open for the fifth annual Lafayette Commodore Baseball Golf Tournament set for Sept. 14. (August 20, 2013, Page 7)
After facing each other earlier in the week, the Lafayette Commodores and Senatobia Warriors hooked up for a rematch Friday night, this time at WV Brewer Field. The Commodores won Tuesday’s game 11-1, and while the offensive surge was not there on Friday, Lafayette defeated the Warriors for the second time in four days with a 6-1 victory.
Senatobia senior pitcher Davis Brown kept the Commodores’ offense in check through most of the game.
It’s hard to imagine Lafayette could have opened its Division 2-4A schedule any better than it did Tuesday night at W.V. Brewer Field.
