Fire strikes bowling alley

An early morning fire left The Lanes bowing alley and Brass Monkey bar and grill destroyed — and Oxford residents without water.

The combination of a high-profile fire and lack of water made for hectic start of the day for emergency responders and hundreds of the city’s residents.

The cause of the city’s water problem started hours before the fire, when a Chevy Tahoe ran off Molly Barr Road at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and struck an electric pole, knocking it down, according to city officials. (September 22, 2010, Page 1)

Officials agree dead tree must be removed

A limb from the large water oak on the east side of the Lafayette County Courthouse fell at about 5:30 Saturday morning onto the wrought-iron fence the surrounds the courthouse. The weight of the limb was so heavy that about 2 feet of the fence buckled, looking as though a car had slammed into it instead of a tree limb.

Now Oxford and Lafayette County officials are scrambling to get the large tree that has provided cool shade on the Square since William Faulkner was a youngster removed before another limb — or the entire tree — falls. (September 16, 2010, Page 1)

Cars barred in Square alley

11th street will now be pedestrian only at night and commercial parking by day after the Board of Aldermen approved to allow Oxford Police Department to close the street on a trial basis between now and Christmas. The street will be closed to cars from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. Other commercial parking changes will now occur on the Square. (September 8, 2010, Page 1)

Retirement day for Col. Reb

Colonel Reb is soon to be a remnant of the past as he goes into the vault tomorrow. Today is the last official day his image can be licensed. The College Licensing Company, the agent for the University of Mississippi licensing issues, released a memo in March to all licensees that the image of the Colonel may only be licensed through August 31. Tomorrow he enters the College Vault Program where the image can only be licensed out for special occasions for historical use. (August 31, 2010, Page 1)

Letters to the Editor

Randy Yates writes about his time in Oxford and his impressions of the local bar and restaurant scene, asking why Sunday should be treated any differently than the other six days of the week, while the L-O-U Homeless Task Force writes to thank the City of Oxford for supporting the Interfaith Compassion Ministry. (August 17, 2010, Page 4)
