LHS Commodores capture 4A North Half title
The No. 1 ranked football team in Class 4A all season is just one win away from actually being crowned as the best.
Lafayette’s Commodores advanced to Jackson to play in the MHSAA’s 4A state championship game for the second straight season after defeating Noxubee County 20-0 Friday night in the 4A North Half title game.
Friday’s win didn’t necessarily come easy for LHS (15-0 overall), but a defense that has been tremendously consistent all season long continued to shine and make things even tougher for the Tigers (13-2) on offense that it was on the Commodores, who have now only allowed 19 points in four playoff games. LHS makes statement in Round 1 win
Believe it when Lafayette senior defensive end Demetri McIntosh says the top-ranked Commodores wanted to make a statement on Friday night.
After a slow start in the first quarter, the Lafayette Commodores rattled off 49 unanswered points to claim a 49-7 victory over the North Pontotoc Vikings in the Class 4A, first-round playoff meeting at William L. Buford Stadium. (November 8, 2010, Page 6B)
Versatile Conard developing as WVHS leader
Chris Conard has all the attributes of a star football player. He easily passes the eye test and looks good on paper. He has the skill set that not only makes him stand out, but has allowed the current junior to play on Water Valley’s varsity squad since he was in eighth grade.
Last Friday, Conard had a career-game in Water Valley’s 20-10 win in the season finale at Mooreville, grabbing three interceptions while also making nine tackles and breaking up five passes.
It’s because of that stellar performance that Conard was named the EAGLE’s Final Player of the Week for the 2010 season. (November 2, 2010, Page 9)
Mack paces ‘Dores in win over Pats
Thursday may have been Senior Night, but it was sophomore Brandon Mack that stole the show for the Lafayette Commodores.
Starting in place of junior quarterback Jeremy Liggins, who was dressed but held out of the game to rest a sore right ankle, Mack did a little bit of everything to lead the Commodores to a 37-7 victory over the Lewisburg Patriots at William L. Buford Stadium.
Against the Patriots, Mack completed 2 of 6 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 64 yards and two scores, and also intercepted a pass from Lewisburg quarterback Colby Sappington inside Lafayette’s 10-yard line. (October 29, 2010, Page 6A)
LHS hosts Byhalia for Homecoming
Lafayette will return to action at home for the first time against a Region 2-4A opponent Friday night. Byhalia (3-2 overall, 0-1 in region play) will be Lafayette’s opponent for Homecoming and according to LHS coach Anthony Hart, the Indians appear to be the biggest team the Commodores (5-0, 1-0) have played so far. Commodores score early, often in Friday rout
The Lafayette Commodores scored early, often and in a variety of ways Friday night as they posted a 35-16 victory over Memphis Trezevant in their 2010 home opener at William L. Buford Stadium.
Lafayette, now 2-0 heading into its annual Crosstown Classic showdown with Oxford, scored on its second play from scrimmage and on its last play of the first half (that capped an 11-play, 91-yard drive) in building a 35-0 lead that allowed coach Anthony Hart to sit many of his starters in the second half and work on building depth.
