Lady ‘Dores keep rolling in 4A playoffs

A team-first approach made a huge difference for the Lafayette Lady Commodores in their first week of postseason play in the region tournament and again this past Monday in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Lafayette defeated Itawamba AHS Monday to advance to the North Half tournament so it wasn’t shocking to see LHS continue that approach Thursday in a matchup with Kosciusko at Pontotoc High. Five Lady Commodores scored in double figures for coach Amy Sutton’s team and the end result was a 84-53 thrashing and a rematch of last year’s 4A North Half title game against New Albany tonight. (February 18, 2011, Page 6A)

Lady Indians no match for LHS’ team approach

The  Itawamaba Agricultural Lady Indians definitely got the memo on Lafayette guard Shaq Isom: Pay attention and guard her close.

The memo on the rest of the team must have slipped through the cracks, though, as the Lady Commodores, behind a solid team effort, soundly defeated the Lady Indians 63-38 Tuesday night at the LHS gymnasium in the first round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs. (February 16, 2011, Page 7)

Isom leads LHS to 2-4A tourney title

Led by a strong defensive effort and an outstanding all-around performance by Shaq Isom, the Lafayette Lady Commodores captured the Region 2-4A Tournament title Monday night at Center Hill.

LHS defeated Byhalia 70-43 to finish as the No. 1 seed out of the region. The Lady Commodores (23-5) will host Itawamba AHS tonight in the first round of the MHSAA’s Class 4A playoffs and a win gets them closer to a return trip to Jackson to play for the state title. (February 15, 2011, Page 6)

Lafayette splits with District 2-4A foe

A three-day break due to last week’s heavy snowstorm ended up being a huge help to the Lafayette Lady Commodores on Friday night against Senatobia. LHS broke a two-game losing streak in District 2-4A play by downing the Lady Warriors 71-38 in the LHS gym. The win improved the Lady Commodores to 14-3 overall and 4-2 in the district.

Lafayette’s boys weren’t as fortunate as the girls, losting to Senatobia 49-40 in the nightcap. (January 17, 2011, Page 8)

Lady ‘Dores surge to beat Horn Lake

A late surge proved to be crucial for the Lafayette Lady Commodores in their 53-41 victory over Horn Lake, while the Commodores were unable to find consistent scoring in their 52-30 loss to the Eagles on Day 1 of the “O” Town Showdown at the Oxford High gym on Wednesday evening. (December 30, 2010, Page 7A)
