Athletes from Oxford, Lafayette and Water Valley will be taking part in the MHSAA state track meets this weekend. The Class 1A, 3A and 5A meets will be held Saturday at Pearl. The 2A, 4A and 6A meets will be held Monday at PHS. Saturday’s meets begins with field events at 10 a.m. Monday’s meets begins at 11 a.m.
Region 1-5A track titles were awarded to both the Oxford Chargers and Lady Chargers Monday night at Bobby Holcomb Field. “Dominant.” That’s what the Oxford Chargers and Lady Chargers were in the Division 2-5A track meet held Friday at Bobby Holcomb Field. Both teams finished first in the annual meet, with the Chargers scoring 122 points, almost double second-place finisher West Point with 64. Oxford’s track teams opened the 2013 season with a bang as both squads won Saturday’s Oxford EAGLE Invitational meet held at Bobby Holcomb Field. The Chargers more than doubled up second-place finisher West Bolivar (220-98) to win first place, while the Lady Chargers finished with 157 points, 25 more than second-place finisher Independence. CANTON — Eight years after Solomon Bozeman led the Oxford Chargers to an improbable win over Shannon on the road in the first round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs, sophomore K.T. NEW HOPE — If Friday’s Division 2-5A championship game had been 31 minutes long, instead of 32, the Oxford Chargers would be champions rather than the New Hope Trojans. Unable to score in the final 3 minutes and 23 seconds, the Chargers lost their five-point lead and ultimately the game, 45-44, to the Trojans in front of a jubilant crowd in the NHS gym. The third time this year the Oxford Lady Chargers flexed their collective muscle against an overmatched West Point girls basketball team on Tuesday. Even without two players, OHS cruised past West Point 79-37 in Game 1 of the 2-5A Tournament at New Hope High on Tuesday.
The Chargers, meanwhile, had to claw and scratch their way to Friday’s championship game by sneaking past pesky Saltillo 62-60. (February 13, 2013, Page 6)
A rocky start to the Division 2-5A slate is all forgotten now that the Oxford Chargers have repeated as division champions.
