This year’s All-Area team best I’ve seen

This season’s EAGLE All-Area football team was released in Thursday’s sports section. Unfortunately for me, space prevented me from writing a column that would appear next to the story on the back page.

So instead of it appearing on Thursday, I thought sharing my opinion on this year’s team was important.

For those who may have missed the players who made the team, Lafayette junior running back Demarkus Dennis was named Player of the Year, while another 11 Commodores who helped the school win the Class 4A state title made the first-team squad. Three other LHS players were named honorable mention.

Oxford had seven players on this year’s team, while Water Valley had five. Both the Chargers and Blue Devils each had three players receive honorable mention status. (December 17, 2010, Page 6A)

Nutt shoots down rumors, talks future

Diana Nutt won’t be needing to purchase snow gear anytime soon.

During Monday’s end-of-the-year press conference at the Indoor Practice Facility, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt, Diana’s husband, denied Internet rumors that he was interested in the head job at Colorado, vacated by the firing of Dan Hawkins. (November 30, 2010, Page 8)

Bolden continues to run well for Rebels

There were no bright spots to talk about for the Ole Miss offense in Saturday’s 52-14 loss to the Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium with the exception of the running of junior Brandon Bolden.

Bolden carried the ball 12 times for 113 yards and scored both of the team’s touchdowns in a game that was essentially decided by the start of the third quarter.

The two scores for Bolden raised his season total to 11 on the year and 20 in his career, while his rushing effort gave him five games of over 100 yards. (November 15, 2010, Page 2B)

Masoli back at practice, status still in question

Jeremiah Masoli’s status as the starting quarterback when the Ole Miss Rebels travel to play the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville, Tenn., this weekend is still up in the air. Masoli is being evaluated and treated from a concussion he suffered in the Rebels’ 43-21 win over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday. Masoli was knocked out of the game in the first quarter and did not return.

He missed practice Sunday, and after an off day on Monday, he was back at practice Tuesday, although his work was limited according to head football trainer Tim Mullins and coach Houston Nutt. (November 10, 2010, Page 8)

Nutt hoping for good news on QB Masoli

The immediate availability of Jeremiah Masoli is still up in the air after the senior quarterback suffered what was called a mild concussion during Saturday’s 43-21 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday.

During Monday’s regularly scheduled press conference, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said he was hoping to get an update on Masoli’s status for this weekend’s game at Tennessee today. (November 9, 2010, Page 8)
